Spring Gulf Stream Success with Captain Jonathan Weiss
Oregon Inlet - Dare, NC
The offshore action at Oregon Inlet is heating up as we move further into the spring season. Recent trips to the Gulf Stream have seen a consistent bite, with the warm blue water pushing in and bringing plenty of activity to the surface. Our focus has shifted from the late-winter Bluefin run to a more diverse variety of high-intent sportfish.
The Yellowfin Tuna are currently the stars of the show, with multiple fish being boated on recent full-day trips. Along with the tuna, we are starting to see the first solid arrival of Mahi Mahi and the occasional Bigeye Tuna in the mix. Conditions have been favorable, allowing the Carly A to reach the primary fishing grounds efficiently to maximize time with lines in the water.
Current Highlights:
Species: Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Bigeye Tuna.
Techniques: Trolling with heavy tackle and skirted ballyhoo has been the most effective method this week.
Location: Working the temperature breaks approximately 35 to 45 miles offshore.
The spring season is one of the most productive times for Outer Banks offshore fishing. As we move toward May and June, we expect the Mahi Mahi numbers to increase and the tuna bite to remain steady. If you are looking to get on the water while the action is hot, now is the time to secure your date at Pirate’s Cove Marina.
